Kanan Gill is one of India’s most prominent stand-up comedians, writers, and performers, widely credited with shaping the modern Indian comedy scene. Born on December 24, 1989, in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and raised in Bengaluru, Gill initially pursued a conventional path, studying engineering before briefly working in the corporate sector. However, his passion for comedy soon took centre stage, leading him to perform at open mics and comedy clubs during the early rise of India’s stand-up movement. He first gained nationwide recognition with his viral YouTube series “Pretentious Movie Reviews”, co-created with fellow comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath. His observational style — rooted in everyday experiences, social behaviour, and self-aware storytelling — quickly set him apart, earning him a reputation for intelligent, clean, and universally relatable comedy.
As a live performer, Kanan Gill has enjoyed immense success, touring extensively across India and internationally with multiple sold-out shows. His stand-up specials, including “Keep It Real” and “Yours Sincerely”, have been critically acclaimed for their structured storytelling, subtle wit, and emotional depth, showcasing his evolution as a comedian beyond punchline-driven humour. Gill has received numerous accolades for his contribution to comedy and digital entertainment, including recognition from leading media platforms and comedy festivals. Beyond stand-up, he has expanded his creative footprint as a writer and actor, starring in projects such as the Amazon Prime Video series “LOL: Hasse Toh Phasse” and his acclaimed Netflix comedy special “Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill”, which resonated strongly with global audiences. Known for his thoughtful approach to comedy, he often blends humour with introspection, exploring themes of ambition, relationships, modern identity, and personal growth.
