UB40 are one of the most successful and influential reggae bands in music history, renowned for bringing reggae to a global mainstream audience while staying rooted in socially conscious themes. Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, the band took their name from the UK government’s unemployment benefit form, reflecting their early working-class identity and political awareness. UB40 first rose to prominence with their debut album Signing Off (1980), a critically acclaimed release that addressed issues such as unemployment, racism, and social inequality, and spent an extraordinary two years on the UK Albums Chart. Their distinctive sound — blending reggae rhythms with pop sensibilities and smooth vocal harmonies — soon gained widespread appeal, helping them bridge cultural and musical boundaries. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, UB40 became international stars with a run of iconic albums and singles, including Labour of Love, Promises and Lies, and UB44, delivering timeless hits such as Red Red Wine, Kingston Town, Can’t Help Falling in Love, Cherry Oh Baby, and Food for Thought.
Over their long and prolific career, UB40 have sold over 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling British bands of all time. They have achieved more than 50 charting singles in the UK, including multiple UK No. 1 hits, and enjoyed enormous success across Europe, North America, and Asia. The band has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and has received widespread recognition for its role in popularising reggae music beyond Jamaica, while maintaining respect for the genre’s roots and traditions. Known for their laid-back yet powerful live performances, UB40 have toured extensively for decades, performing to sold-out arenas, festivals, and outdoor venues around the world. In 2026, UB40 continue to captivate audiences with live shows that celebrate their rich musical legacy, combining classic anthems with deep-cut fan favourites and new material. Their enduring popularity, unmistakable sound, and cross-generational appeal ensure that UB40 remain a defining force in reggae and pop music history.
