ABOUT USTAD AMJAD ALI KHAN

If you think of classical music and sarod, one name that flashes in your mind instantly is that of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Born in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, India, Khan has music running in his blood. He belongs to the renowned Bangash lineage that is rooted in Senia Bangash school of music. Amjad Ali Khan is the 6th generation of sarod player in his illustrious family. Khan proudly calls Sarod his family instrument and has trained his two sons Amaan and Ayaan on it. Today both his sons are carrying forward the lineage of their father and forefathers to audiences across the globe.

Amjad Ali Khan has simplified Sarod by removing some strings and his unique sarod has only 2 jod and chikari strings & 11 tarab stings. He has also removed the resonant gourd used by other sarod schools. Khan in 1977 also founded the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Society dedicated to his father Hafiz Ali Khan. The society organizes various musical concerts in India and abroad.

Amjad Ali Khan has been bestowed with several award and honours These include the prestigious Padmashree (1975), Sangeet Natak Academy Award (1989), the Tansen Award (1989) the Padma Bhushan (1991)
