The Orchestral Qawwali Project 2025
About
The Orchestral Qawwali Project brings a captivating fusion of cultures to the Barbican, joining forces with the CBSO, CBSO Chorus, and University of Birmingham Voices.
Under the direction of celebrated composer Rushil Ranjan and acclaimed vocalist Abi Sampa, this groundbreaking project revitalizes age-old Sufi traditions. Ranjan’s lush orchestral arrangements seamlessly merge Western classical elements with South Asian music and Indian classical dance, creating a powerful and immersive musical experience.
Since its inception in 2020, the ensemble has played to packed audiences across the UK, including a landmark debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 2024, which earned Rushil and Abi the title of Associate Artists.
Now, with award-winning conductor Melvin Tay leading the way, this extraordinary collaboration arrives at the Barbican.
