The Playhouse Company is a major professional theatre and cultural institution based in Durban, serving as the leading performing arts organization for the region and one of South Africa’s most respected theatre bodies. It operates out of the historic Playhouse Theatre Complex on Anton Lembede Street (formerly Smith Street) in the heart of Durban’s central business district.
The company produces and presents a wide range of live performing arts, including music concerts, drama productions, dance performances, and cultural showcases, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of KwaZulu‑Natal and South Africa as a whole. It focuses on artistic excellence while also supporting arts education, development programmes, and community engagement initiatives that nurture emerging talent and broaden access to the arts.
In addition to producing its own performances, The Playhouse Company manages several theatre spaces within the Playhouse complex — such as the Opera Theatre, Drama Theatre, and Loft Theatre — which are also available for hire for external events and productions.
