Rishi Budhrani returns with the critically acclaimed comedy production “Can I Make You A Suit, Mate?”, a unique performance that blends humor, nostalgia, and heartfelt storytelling. After multiple sold-out runs in 2022 and 2024, the show has gained both critical praise and commercial success for its engaging and relatable narrative. In this semi-improvised comedic monologue, Budhrani—who made history as the first stand-up comedian to host the National Day Parade 2022 and is also known as the voice of Sammy in the Netflix animated series Downstairs—draws inspiration from his father’s life to tell the story of a Singaporean tailor who has spent more than four decades running his business. Through witty observations and touching reflections, the tailor recounts his experiences dealing with customers from around the world while navigating major global and regional events such as the Gulf War, the SARS outbreak, the Asian Financial Crisis, and the recent pandemic. As he shares these stories, he entertains the audience with humor and warmth while attempting to win their friendship—and perhaps even make them a suit—creating a deeply personal yet universally relatable narrative. The production was first presented by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay during the Kalaa Utsavam – Indian Festival of Arts in 2022, further cementing its place as a truly tailor-made Singaporean story.
