About

Ali Campbell, the founding member and iconic voice of UB40, reflected on the band’s remarkable journey, recalling how he invested everything he had—including compensation from an injury claim—when forming the group in 1978, never imagining they would go on to sell over 100 million records and take their Birmingham-born reggae sound to a global audience. Known for their socially conscious lyrics and smooth fusion of reggae, dub, and pop, UB40 rose to international fame in the 1980s with chart-topping hits like Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, and (I Can’t Help) Falling in Love with You, alongside influential albums such as Signing Off and Labour of Love, which addressed themes of social struggle and unity. After leaving the band in 2008 due to financial disputes, Campbell continued his musical path with projects like Running Free and Flying High, later joining forces with Mickey Virtue and Astro to form UB40 ft Ali, Astro & Mickey, preserving the original spirit of the band. Following Astro’s passing in 2021, Campbell has carried forward the legacy, delivering energetic performances that celebrate classic hits such as “Cherry Oh Baby,” “Please Don’t Make Me Cry,” and “Kingston Town,” while continuing to captivate audiences worldwide with sold-out tours and a timeless reggae sound.
