Prateek Kuhad is an Indian singer-songwriter and musician, renowned for his independent music in both Hindi and English. He gained widespread recognition for his track “Kasoor.”
Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Kuhad has two sisters. He learned to play the guitar at the age of 16 and began writing songs in his late teens. Kuhad completed his high school education at Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Vidyalaya in Jaipur, before studying Maths and Economics at New York University. After graduating, he moved to Delhi to pursue music full-time.
Kuhad’s musical journey began after returning to India, where he released his first EP, Prateek Kuhad, followed by Raat Raazi in 2013. His debut album, In Tokens & Charms, was released in 2015, establishing him as a prominent figure in India’s independent music scene. In 2020, he made history as the first Indian artist to be signed by the American record label Elektra Records. Kuhad’s third album, The Way That Lovers Do, was released in May 2022.
Kuhad’s music draws influence from iconic artists like Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Laura Marling, and Fleet Foxes. His primary instrument is the acoustic guitar, and his music blends Americana and folk elements with unconventional song structures. Known for his “beautifully haunting” music and “angelic” vocals, Kuhad’s lyrics often explore themes of love, relationships, and personal experiences, with a style that is both poetic and open to interpretation.
