    About Agantuk

As his final work before his death, Satyajit Ray’s 1991 film Agantuk (translation: The Stranger) is one of the most important and beloved works of his career. It tells the story of a young woman who is visited by a man claiming to be her long-lost uncle, and the conflict that arises when his claims are scrutinized by her friends and family. The film is a deeply philosophical and complex piece that examines the clash between traditional values and modern scepticism, as well as the universality of human experience across cultures. The film is an utterly compelling swan song that showcases many of Ray’s contemplations on human nature. Though it may not be as widely known as some of  his other films, Agantuk is a masterpiece that shows a veteran director in peak command of his craft and with plenty to say.

Join us at the Indian Parallel Cinema Festival of Australia on the 11th of August 2024 at Palace Cinema Norton St in Leichhardt to view Sonar Kella on the big screen in addition to a Q/A discussion session attended virtually by our special guest and one of the stars of Agantuk – acclaimed actor Dhritiman Chatterjee.
