Monali Thakur hails from a musically rich Bengali family—her father, Shakti Thakur, was a renowned singer, and her sister, Mehuli Thakur, is also a playback artist. Trained in Hindustani classical music under Pandit Jagdish Prasad and Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, she also learned hip-hop, Bharatanatyam, and Salsa. Her singing journey began in school and college competitions, earning her the Best Playback Singer award at the Anandalok Awards at just 14 for the serial Sri Ramkrishna. Despite gaining attention after finishing ninth in Indian Idol 2, she faced significant struggles before breaking into the Bollywood industry. Her big break came in 2008 with Pritam’s Race, where she sang “Khwab Dekhe (Sexy Lady)” and the hit “Zara Zara Touch Me,” which became a chartbuster and earned her award nominations. She later won a Filmfare Award for “Sawaar Loon” from Lootera. Monali also judged Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs in Bengali, appeared on various TV shows, and was part of Coke Studio.
