Black Bull

The hotel site dates back to 1838 with the establishment of the Buffalo’s Head, the first permanent hotel in the colony. Initially operating from a tent in Buffalo Row, it was named after owner James Chittleborough (Snr), who arrived on the Buffalo in 1836. Renamed The Black Bull in 1841, it featured a humorous sign: “The bull is tame, so fear him not, so long as you can pay your shot. When the money’s gone and credit bad, that’s what makes the bull go mad!”
