Constitution Hill

Constitution Hill is a historic site and cultural landmark located in Johannesburg. It is home to Constitutional Court of South Africa, the country’s highest court for constitutional matters, and serves as a powerful symbol of South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy.

The site was originally a prison complex, which housed many political prisoners during the apartheid era, including prominent leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. Today, the preserved prison buildings form part of a museum that documents the country’s history of struggle, justice, and human rights.

Constitution Hill now functions as a heritage site, museum, and cultural precinct. Visitors can explore historic areas such as the Old Fort Prison, Women’s Jail, and Number Four Prison, which provide insight into the experiences of former inmates and the broader political history of South Africa.

In addition to its historical significance, the venue hosts public events, exhibitions, guided tours, educational programmes, film screenings, and cultural performances. It is also used for conferences, lectures, and community gatherings, making it both a memorial site and an active public space.
