Opened in 1928, the theater was originally designed as a grand movie palace and has since become one of the city’s most cherished cultural landmarks. Known for its beautifully restored architecture and classic interior design, the venue provides a unique setting for film screenings, live performances, and community events.
The theater features a large historic auditorium with ornate décor, a grand stage, and seating for more than 1,500 guests, along with an additional smaller screening space for independent films and special programs. Michigan Theatre hosts a wide variety of events including classic and contemporary film screenings, concerts, comedy shows, lectures, and cultural festivals throughout the year.
Operated by the Michigan Theater Foundation, the venue plays an important role in Ann Arbor’s arts community and often collaborates with institutions such as the University of Michigan to present film series, educational programs, and special events, making it a vibrant hub for culture and entertainment in the region.
