Naval Hill Planetarium is a digital planetarium and astronomy education centre located atop Naval Hill, part of the Centre for Earth and Space initiative. It is recognised as the first digital planetarium in sub‑Saharan Africa, opened in 2013 in the historic Lamont‑Hussey Observatory building.
The venue offers immersive full‑dome projection shows that take visitors on a journey through the universe — from stars and planets to galaxies and cosmic phenomena. These presentations are designed to be educational, engaging, and suitable for all ages, making the planetarium a popular destination for school groups, families, learners, and science enthusiasts.
In addition to regular astronomy shows about the cosmos, the Naval Hill Planetarium hosts special programmes, lectures, themed presentations, and events that highlight topics in astrophysics, space exploration, and cultural connections to the night sky.
The facility also plays an important role in science education and outreach, supporting learning opportunities for students and the broader public, and helping to place Bloemfontein on the map as a centre for astro‑tourism and science communication in southern Africa.
