This changed in 2002 with the opening of Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which took over as the main commercial aviation hub due to its larger capacity and expanded facilities. Despite this shift, Nelspruit Airport remains an important part of the local infrastructure, supporting general aviation activities and smaller-scale operations. The airport is owned and managed by the Mbombela Local Municipality, reflecting its continued significance to the community and its role in the region’s aviation history.
