The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh is a cornerstone of Scotland’s live comedy scene. Founded in 1995 by Tommy Sheppard and Jane Mackay, it began in a small basement venue on Edinburgh’s West Port before moving to its current location at 5 York Place in 1998. As Scotland’s first full-time comedy club, The Stand has been instrumental in nurturing local talent and providing a platform for emerging comedians. The club hosts up to ten shows a week, including the popular “Red Raw” open-mic night and “The Best of Scottish Comedy,” featuring multiple local acts. Its intimate cabaret-style setting, with a capacity of around 160, ensures a close connection between performers and the audience. The Stand is also a prominent venue during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, contributing to the city’s reputation as a global comedy hub.
