Tithe Barn

The Tithe Barn, located on West Walls by Heads Lane in Carlisle, is a historic Grade I listed building dating back to the 1470s. Originally built for Thomas Gondibour, Prior of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary, it served as a tithe barn until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Over the centuries, it has had varied uses, including as a stable, dispensary, dwelling, and joiner’s shop. Part of the barn became the Carlisle Dispensary in 1824. Rescued from demolition in 1965 by the Carlisle and District Civic Trust, it was restored between 1969 and 1971 and now serves as the church hall for St Cuthbert’s Church.
